Winchester, the ancient capital of England, has so much to offer to those who live, visit or work here. There is a wealth of heritage that we want to preserve – it’s a unique setting, repeatedly named as one of the most desirable places to live in the country.

But it is not only our city that makes us special: 240 square miles, 40% in south downs national park, bustling market towns and villages, business and retail opportunities at Whitely. Our district is vibrant and diverse.

We want to invest in our district and this role plays a pivotal part in leading our team to create a district where everyone has opportunity. We want to ensure that improvement, innovation and efficiency are top of our agenda and the district continues to thrive. And we are committed to doing all we can to protect our natural environment and play our part in addressing issues of climate change. We have set ourselves ambitious targets: that Winchester City Council will be carbon neutral by 2024; and that the Winchester district will be carbon neutral by 2030.

There are some critical transformational projects that will fall under your stewardship – including a £multi-million town centre regeneration scheme, bringing to life our £40 million investment in our new sport and leisure park and bringing forward development and investment to help our businesses recover from the pandemic. Add to this, responsibility for the strategic planning of our district, and you can have a transformational impact on life in our district over the coming years. Delivery of these projects demands the right blend of vision and pragmatism – coupling the ambition to look beyond traditional ways of doing things with a distinct focus on making it work on the ground.

Our Strategic Director will play a vital part in managing this growth in population effectively, ensuring our communities are sustainable, great places to live and supported by a degree of economic growth and investment that will ensure the district and its people continue to thrive. You will lead this development and economic agenda, carefully interlacing it with your leadership of our work on climate change, working with partners and our community.

I look forward to receiving your application.
